What is a market on Kalshi?

Checked September 25, 2026 · 2 sources · plain-English definition, not financial advice

Market: One yes-or-no contract inside a Kalshi event, such as "Above 3.10" in a gas price event, with its own ticker, order book, prices and rules.

How it works on Kalshi

In Kalshi's own terminology a market is a single binary contract: one question that resolves Yes or No. Kalshi's API glossary calls it a low level object and says the event, a collection of markets, is the unit members usually interact with. Each market has its own ticker, Yes and No prices, order book, volume and settlement rules.

Example from Kalshi's documentation: the monthly US gas price series KXAAAGASM has an event for September 30, 2026 (KXAAAGASM-26SEP30), and that event lists one market per price strike, such as KXAAAGASM-26SEP30-3.00 ("Above 3.00") and KXAAAGASM-26SEP30-3.10 ("Above 3.10"). Buying Yes on the 3.10 market is a position on that one threshold only.

Candidate races work the same way: Kalshi's documentation notes that each candidate is a separate market. What to check: the rules and strike of the market you are buying, not just the event title, because two markets in the same event can pay out on different results.
