Volume: The number of Kalshi contracts traded in a market over a period, such as the last 24 hours or its whole life, counted in contracts, not dollars.
The CFTC glossary defines volume as the number of contracts traded during a specified period. Kalshi's API reports volume in contracts for each market, both over the market's life and for the last 24 hours, and a total across all events in a series.
Because volume is counted in contracts, the dollar amount depends on price: 10,000 contracts traded at 5¢ is $500 of trading, while 10,000 at 50¢ is $5,000. Compare the dollar value as well when you judge how active a market is.
What to check: 24-hour volume says whether buyers and sellers are active today, while lifetime volume can be old. Kalshi's rulebook requires trade volume to be visible to members. Kalshi View's movers page lists 24-hour volume next to each price move.
