What is the close time on Kalshi?

Checked September 25, 2026 · 4 sources · plain-English definition, not financial advice

Close time: When trading in a Kalshi market stops; after it, orders are rejected and resting orders are canceled while the market awaits its result.

How it works on Kalshi

Kalshi's API documentation defines close_time as when trading stops. Once it passes, the market is closed, all order operations including cancellations are rejected, and resting orders are cancelled shortly after. The market then waits for determination.

Close time is not the result time. Kalshi's help center lists two kinds of closing, closure when the outcome occurs and closure at a listed date and time, and says the displayed close time may not equal determination time. The close time can also move: earlier for markets that can close early, or into the future if Kalshi extends the market.

Example: Kalshi's CPI contract terms set the last trading time at 8:29 AM ET on release day, one minute before the 8:30 AM ET data release. What to check: the grey text under "Pays out" on the market page, which Kalshi says describes the closing time in full, and whether an order you rely on will still be live when the news lands.
